Ancient Indian Kingdoms in 600 BC

Kambojas (कंबोज) were a tribe of Iron Age India, frequently mentioned in Sanskrit and Pali literature. The tribe coalesced to become one of the solasa (sixteen) Mahajanapadas (great kingdoms) of ancient India mentioned in the Anguttara Nikaya. They fought Mahabharata War in Kaurava's side.

Variants

  • Kamboja (कांबोज) = दे. कंबोज (AS, p.160)
  • Kamboja कंबोज (AS, p.123)

Jat clan

Kamboj (काम्बोज)[1] [2] Kamboh (काम्बोह)[3][4] Kambuh (कम्बुह)[5] is a gotra of Jats found in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Kamboh (काम्बोह) is Muslim Jat clan found in Pakistan. Kamboh clan is found in Afghanistan.[6]Dilip Singh Ahlawat has mentioned it as one of the ruling Jat clans in Central Asia. [7] It is an important tribe of Punjab (Pakistan).[8]

Kambojs Jats are said to be the descendants of rishi Kondilya (कोंडिल्य). They are also called Kamedia. [9]

Mention by Panini

Kamboja (कंबोज) is mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi. [10]

Jat Gotras Namesake

Mention by Pliny

Pliny[11] mentions Ethiopia....These are the names of places given as far as Meroë: but at the present day hardly any of them on either side of the river are in existence; at all events, the prætorian troops that were sent by the Emperor Nero7 under the command of a tribune, for the purposes of enquiry, when, among his other wars, he was contemplating an expedition against Æthiopia, brought back word that they had met with nothing but deserts on their route.

The Roman arms also penetrated into these regions in the time of the late Emperor Augustus, under the command of P. Petronius,8 a man of Equestrian rank, and prefect of Egypt. That general took the following cities, the only ones we now find mentioned there, in the following order; Pselcis,9 Primis, Abuncis, Phthuris, Cambusis, Atteva, and Stadasis, where the river Nile, as it thunders down the precipices, has quite deprived the inhabitants of the power of hearing: he also sacked the town of Napata.10 The extreme distance to which he penetrated beyond Syene was nine hundred and seventy miles; but still it was not the Roman arms that rendered these regions a desert.

7 Dion Cassius also mentions this expedition. From Seneca we learn that Nero dispatched two centurions to make inquiry into the sources of the Nile.

8 Dion Cassius calls him Caius Petronius. He carried on the war in B.c. 22 against the Æthiopians, who had invaded Egypt under their queen Candace. He took many of their towns.

9 Du Bocage is of opinion that this place stood not far from the present Ibrim.

10 Supposed by Du Bocage to have stood in the vicinity of the modern Dongola

Ethnicity

The ancient Kambojas were probably of Indo-Iranian origin.[12] They are, however, sometimes described as Indo-Aryans[13] and sometimes as having both Indian and Iranian affinities.[14][15][16] The Kambojas are also described as a royal clan of the Sakas.[17]

History

V. S. Agrawala[18] writes that The Janapadas known to Panini include: Kamboja (कंबोज) (IV.1.175), under Kachchhadi (कच्छादि) (IV.2.133) (शैषिक अण्। Gandhara, Kapisha, Balhika and Kamboja are four janapadas mentioned by Panini in Ashtadhyayi (IV.1.175) of which relative positions is to be understood clearly.

The Harsha Charita of Bana/Chapter II mentions The Visit of Bana to the King Harshavardhana....The doorkeeper, having come up and saluted him, addressed him respectfully in a gentle voice, "Approach and enter, his highness is willing to see you." Then Bana entered, as he directed, saying, "I am indeed happy that he thinks me worthy of this honour." He next beheld a stable filled with the king's favourite horses from Vanayu, Aratta, Kamboja, Bharadvaja, Sindh, and Persia....

Bhim Singh Dahiya[21] mentions that When Arjuna went to that northwest area, for his Digvijaya, he fought with another Jat tribe, called the Lambas, (their name is Sanskritised into Lampakas meaning long, tall statured, high, the same as Lamba). Mahabharata mentions, another Jat clan, viz., the Lohnas :"लोहान परमकाम्बोजान".[22] Lohanas are a still existing Jat clan, whereas Kambojas are a separate caste of the Hindus, nowadays called Kamboh and Kamoha found on the G. T. Road near Karnal town and other areas.

The Nakodar, town and tahsil in Jalandhar district in Punjab, according to one account, is a said to be derived from the Persian words Neki ka dar, which mean 'Gate of Goodness or Virtue' and it was named so by the Persian Kambohs. According to another version, the town was so-named after Nikudari legion of the Mongols[23].

The Town is of considerable antiquity and had been held in succession by three different races, the Jats , Kambohs (Kamboj) and then by the muslim Rajputs, traces of whom still exist in the extensive ruins by which the town is surrounded. The town was anciently founded by the Hindu Kamboh, according to Sir William Wilson Hunter and others [24]. The Kamboh settlements lay to the west of present town and the sites are still marked by extensive ruins and two old fine tombs, now called the Black and Red Domes, from the color of the material. Tradition attributes the Kamboh expulsion to the Nawab Kutb Khan who came with an army from Indor near Nuh in 1570 AD [25]. As a consequence, the lordship of the town thus passed over to the Khanzadaas from the Kamboj tribe. Within two generations, the Rajputs got the town in jagir from Emperor Jahangir, in later sixteenth century, apparently divesting the Khanzadahs, the successor race to the Kambohs. The Rajputs were themselves later ousted during Sikh period by one Sardar Tara Singh Ghaiba who made a fort and made himself the master of the surroundings. From Ghaiba, the town was seized by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in 1816. The town is well pave and has thriving appearances and currently forms a Tehsil of District Jalandhar. Outside the town, there are two large and handsome tombs dating at least from the times of Emperor Jahangir, later one of them is said to be the burial place of the adviser of Emperor Shah Jahan, but it is known who stand buried in the earlier tomb.

Rajatarangini[26] tells that king of Kashmir Lalitaditya, finding that almost all the kings had been conquered, turned towards the north, and had to fight his way with the haughty kings in that direction. He robbed the king of Kamvoja of his horses. In the mountains of Bhuskhāra the horses of the king became excited at the sight of the horse-faced women of the country.

Indian Origin Places in Burma

Dineschandra Sircar[27] writes.... Some important old Indian names found in Burma are Aparanta, Avanti, Varanasi, Champanagara, Dvaravati, Gandhara, Kamboja, Kailasha, Kusumapura, Mithila, Pushkara, Pushkaravati, Rajagriha, etc. and the names Sankashya (Tagaung on the Upper Irawadi), Utkala (from Rangoon to Pegu) and Vaishali (modern Vethali in the Akyub district also fall in the same category.[28] The name of the well-known river Irawadi reminds us of Iravati (modern Ravi River), one of the famous tributaries of the Indus.

In Mahabharata

  • Kamboja (काम्बॊज) is mentioned in Mahabharata (I.177.15), (1.188), (II.24.22), (V.19.21),(V.158.20), (VI.10.64),(VI.47.18), (VII.67.67),(VI.52.7),(VI.83.10),
