Kanishka (कनिष्क) (Kushan language: KANHÞKI, Ancient Chinese: 迦腻色伽) was a king of the Kushan Empire in South Asia, in the 2nd century of the common era, famous for his military, political, and spiritual achievements. His capital was Purushpur identified as the modern Peshawar in Pakistan.

History

Rajatarangini[1] tells us that there were on the throne of Kashmira three kings reigning jointly, namely, Hushka, Jushka and

[p.13]: Kanishka ; they built three cities and called these after their names, Jushka also caused a monastery to be built and another town named Jayasvamipura. Though they were of Turashka origin, they yet built several monasteries and places of worship on the plains of Shushkaletra. During their long reigns Buddhist hermits were all-power-ful in the country, and Buddhist religion prevailed without opposition. From the death of Buddha Shakyashiha to this time of Lokadhatu, one hundred and fifty years had passed. Nagarjuna a great Boddhisattva then stopped for six days in the woods of Kashmira.

Ram Sarup Joon[2] writes that .... According to various writers, this king belonged to Kushana dynasty. He ruled for 23 years near about 45 AD. He was an ardent follower of Buddhism and contributed a great deal towards its expansion. His empire included the whole of Northern India extending to the Southern borders of China.

In Chinese History he is also described as belonging to Yuehchi (Yuti) race. His successors were Vushishka, Huvishka and Vasudeva. This dynasty ruled for 95 years. The last ruler gave up Buddhism and adopted Vaishnavism. He lost control of Kabul. Then, in about 4th Century AD, Nagas conquered their entire territory and made Mathura their capital.

Kanishka's clan was Kaswan

Kanishka was a Kushan of Yuezhi ethnicity. He probably spoke an Indo-European language related to Tocharian, and he used the Greek script in his inscriptions.

James Legge has mentioned in the book : A RECORD OF BUDDHISTIC KINGDOMS, chapter XII about the rule of Kanishka in foot note-4 that “Kanishka appeared, and began to reign, early in our first century, about A.D. 10. He was the last of three brothers, whose original seat was in Yueh-she, immediately mentioned, or Tukhara.”

He further mentions in footnote-6 that “This king was perhaps Kanishka himself, Fa-hien mixing up, in an inartistic way, different legends about him. Eitel suggests that a relic of the old name of the country may still exist in that of the Jats or Juts of the present day. A more common name for it is Tukhara, and he observes that the people were the Indo-Scythians of the Greeks, and the Tartars of Chinese writers, who, driven on by the Huns (180 BC), conquered Transoxiana, destroyed the Bactrian kingdom (126 BC), and finally conquered the Punjab, Cashmere, and great part of India, their greatest king being Kanishka (E. H., p. 152).”

Bhim Singh Dahiya has also proved in his book Jats: The Ancient Rulers that Yuezhi are Jats and Kaswan is nothing but Kushan.

Alexander Cunningham considers Jats of India, Goths of Europe and yuezhi of China as same people.

As per above discussion it is clear that the Kushan ruler Kanishka was a Jat of Kaswan gotra.

Kushanas were Jats - Inscriptional evidences

Bhim Singh Dahiya has also discussed in detail on pp. 38-41 on the basis of evidences in inscriptions of Kushan period and proved in his book "Jats: The Ancient Rulers" that Kushanas were Jats. According to him Sten Konow, analyses the word Yue-che and mentions that the first term, Yue, is pronounced as getsu in Sino-Japanese, ngoat/nuet in Anaamese/and ngiw ut in Tang period of China[3]. The second term, che, was pronounced as ti, the Cantonese tai, and the Tang period tiei. After quoting Klaproth and Prof. Karlgren, he has shown that the word Yue-che can be pronounced as gat, got, or gut. He has taken the names of two persons from Junar inscriptions, and these names are Yavana Irila (The latter is taken by Waddel, as the original word for the English title, Earl) [4]

Now letus take the clan names from the inscriptions of Kushana period.

  1. The first is the name of Kushana itself. We have shown above that this word is Kaswan/Kasuān, a clan name of Jats. This clan is the same as the latter Rajput name , Kashwaha/Kushwaha, sanskritized into Kashyapaghat/Kacchapa, because of similarity of sound with Kachhua meaning tortoise in Prakrit. Actually the word Kashuā (XWN of Tokharian language) means king, and has no connection whatsoever with the tortoise, as supposed by some PANDITS. The Taxila Ladle copper inscription has this word as Kaśaviana. [5] Our view is that this word is Kaśaviana i.e. Kaswan.[6]
  2. A seal inscription of Śiva Sena is noted which Cunningham read as, "Śivasena, of the race of Atri, Satrap of Pothowar". [7] Here Atri is a Jat of that clan.
  3. Manikiālā stone inscription of the year 18, reads a name, "Khuda Chiena"[8]. Here the person named is China Jat, the Chinā of Puranas.
    1. Manikiālā bronze casket inscription reads, "Gift of Kapiśa satrap, the son of the satrap, Graņa Vhryaka". [9] Here the Vhryaka is a Virk Jat clan.
  4. Tor Dheri inscription mentions a person, "Yola Mira Śhāhi".[10] Here Shahi is a Jat clan.
  5. Paţhyār Inscription mentions a pond of “Yayula Rāţhi” and Prof. Vogel is quoted to say that Rāţhi is the same as the agricultural caste of Kangra. Majumdar is quoted to say that Vayula is an un-Indian name. [11] Both “ Vogel and Majumdar, are right and Rathi is a Jat clan.
  6. We know Satrap Liaka Kuzula, and his son Patika Kuzula. This clan is also associated with Kozola Kadphises, i.e., Kad (High) Phises (lord or chief) of Kozola clan. Sten Konow rightly endorses the view of Prof. Luders that Kuzula/ Kozola is a family name. [12] In fact it is a clan name, now written as Kazala/Kajala. THe Kajla Jats are now found in Bikaner area. [13] (see also W. Hoey, on the word Kozola)
  7. THe Zeda rock inscription, near Und (in Pakistan) of the year 11 of the Saka era, mentions the digging of a well, during the reign of Kanishka, which was gifted by one Hippea Dhia in honour of Ksatrapa Liaka [14], [15] Here the donor is definitely a Jat of Dahiya clan. Even now many persons write it as Dhia. This important inscription further proves that the individual named, was from Bulkh area which was called “Dahia” by the Chinese, of course, because of the predominant clan of that area in those times, were the Dahiya Jats. The word Hippea seems ot be rather Greek than Persian. This also shows the historic process because the Chinese “ Dahia” area was later on under the Greeks for a long period of about 200 years.
  8. The next example is taken from the famous Surkh Kotal inscription written in Greek and relating to the year 31 of Saka ara. Here the work done was the repair of a sanctuary built by Kanishka. The inscription was recorded by two persons whose names are given as Mihra Mān and Burzmihr Puhr. Here again the two persons who are of course, important officers of the empire were two Jats from the Mān and Puhr/Pawar clans. Again the names here are decidedly Iranian. [16]
  9. The next is the Ara inscription near Attock, written in Khāroşţhi script in the year 41. This inscription refers to the digging of a well by one Dashavhara in honour of his mother and father and for the welfare of himself, his wife, his sons and all beings. This name is reminiscent of another Jat clan , nowadays called “ Deswal/ Daswal.
  10. The next example is the inscription kept in the Lucknow Museum written in Brahmi script in the IXth year of Saka era. Here the subject matter is the gift by a lady, Gahapala , daughter of Grahamitra and wife of Ekra Dala. This name is again reminiscent of the name of the Jat clan Dall/Dhall.
  11. Yet another inscription of Wardak near Kabul of the year 51 relates of the establishment of the relic of Lord Buddha in a stupa by Vagramarega who is shown as a scion of Kama Gulya. Here we have yet another clan name Gulya of the Jats, perhaps.
  12. Mathura inscription of the year 28, mentions an official named Khara, son of Kanasaruka Mān, ruler of Saler (Sālār, a Jat clan) and Wakhan. Here again we have a Jat of Mān clan. [17]
  13. The last example is of the famous Panjtar now in (Pakistan) stone inscription written in the year 122 of Saka ara. It referse to one “ Lala, the protector of the Kushana dynasty of Maharaja Kanishka” . This Lala, was a Lalli “Jat” It also refers to the gift of two trees by one Moika in the eastern region of “ Kasua”. That last word Kasua is the same as Kasuan the name of the Kushana clan (and territory) which is still existing. [18]

One of the Greatest Buddhist Kings

Kanishka was the successor of Vima Kadphises, as demonstrated by genealogy record of the Kushan kings, known as the Rabatak inscription. A significant amount of what is known about Kanishka was preserved because of his spiritual merit and the Buddhist religious tradition. Along with the Indian king Ashoka, the Indo-Greek king Menander I (Milinda), and Harshavardhana, he is considered one of the greatest Buddhist kings.

In spite of the acknowledged dominance of the Kushan empire during his reign, until recently scholars have not been able to agree on the period of his reign. There have been held three conferences to resolve this date. In recent years the debate has focused around the relatively narrow period between AD 100 and AD 144 as the likely date of ascension, although recent discoveries call even these theories into question.

Kanishka's Empire

Kanishka's empire was certainly vast. It extended from the Oxus in the west to Varanasi and Mathura in the east (the Rabatak inscription even claims he held Pataliputra), and from Kashmir in the North to the coast of Gujarat in the south, including Malwa.

Knowledge of his hold over Central Asia is less well established. Chinese records indicate that general Ban Chao fought battles with a Kushan army at Khotan in AD 90, probably headed by Kujula Kadphises. Though he claimed to be victorious (Kujula Kadphises is recorded has having paid tribute to China), the region fell to Kushan forces shortly afterwards, probably under Kanishka's rule. As a result, the territory of the Kushans extended to Kashgar, Khotan and Yarkand, which were Chinese dependencies in the Tarim Basin, modern Xinjiang. Several coins of Kanishka have been found in the Tarim Basin.

Kanishka's reputation in Buddhist tradition is based mainly on his having convened the 4th Buddhist Council in Kashmir. This council is attributed with having encouraged the spread of Mahayana Buddhism.

He provided encouragement to both the Gandhara school of Greco-Buddhist Art and the Mathura school of Hindu art (An inescapable religious syncretism pervades Kushana rule). Kanishka personally seems to have embraced both Buddhism and the Persian cult of Mithra.

His greatest contribution to Buddhist architecture is the great stupa at Peshawar. Archaeologists rediscovered it in 1908-1909 ascertained that this stupa had a diameter of 286 feet. Reports of Chinese pilgrims such as Xuan Zang indicate that its height was 600 to 700 (Chinese) "feet" (= roughly 180-210 metres or 591-689 ft.). Certainly this would rank among the wonders of the ancient world.

Kanishka is said to have been particularly close to the Buddhist scholar Ashvaghosha, who became his religious advisor.

Inscriptions at Mathura

James Todd writes that Some sacrificial pillars (yupa) were recently found in the bed of the Jumna near Mathura, with inscriptions dated in the twenty-fourth year of Kanishka's reign, about A.D. 102. [19]
