Bal (बल)[1][2] [3] Bala (बल )Balyan (बलयाण) is a gotra of Jats found in Punjab and Haryana in India and Pakistan. Bala Jat clan is found in Afghanistan.[4] James Tod places it in the list of Thirty Six Royal Races.[5] Bal/Vala is a Gotra of the Anjana Jats in Gujarat.

Origin

Ancestry of Bali as per Bhagavata Purana

Bal people are said to be descendants of Raja Bali (बलि). [6]

This gotra traces its origin from Ghazni (now in Afghanistan). People belonging to the Bal gotra claim to be descendants of Suryavanshi Raja Bali. [7] But according to Bhagvat Dutt they belong to the Anu dynasty. According to the Mahabharata (Chapter -Adi Parva) King Bali is called the grandson on the maternal side of Raja Daksha. [8]

According to "Deva Samhita", some Jats are the descendants of the daughter of Raja Daksha. Many historians regard Bali as the descendant of Yayati. Bhagwat Dutt has proved that the Baluchies (of Baluchistan) are the descendant of Anu. [9]

Badwa Yup inscription of Maukhari rulers mentions a Mahasenapati named Bala.

History

Vala king is mentioned in Rajatarangini[14].

H.A. Rose[15] writes that Bal (बल), a Jat tribe of the Bias and Upper Sutlej, said to be a clan of the Sekhu tribe with whom they do not intermarry. Their ancestor is also said to have been named Baya Bal, a Rajput who came from Malwa. The name Bal, which means " strength," is a famous one in ancient Indian history, and recurs in all sorts of forms and places. In Amritsar they say they came from Ballamgarh, and do not inter-marry with the Dhillon. Bal (बल), a Jat clan found in Amritsar.

H.A. Rose[16] mentions that The migrations of the Jats into Kapurthala illustrate the history of the population of the Punjab.....from Delhi came the Hundal, Dhadah, Bhaun, Bal, Bhandal, Bisal and Bulai.

Ram Swarup Joon[17] writes.... According to Bhagwatdatta, Baluchis of (of Balochistan) today are the descendants of Anu. Baluchya, Balhara, Bal, Balan are Jat gotras. Kak, Kakarzai, Klock, Kukar, Khokar, Karskar Jats belong to the Anu Branch. Thirty thousand Baluchis in Makran were recognised as Jats. Baluchis of the Lomri region are described as Jats in their chronicles. In the Rig-Veda, there are references to the Kabul River of Afghanistan, Gomal Valley, and rivers Ganga and Jamuna. There are also references to Kshatriya and the five branches of the Yayati Dynasty.

Ram Swarup Joon[18] writes that People belonging to the Bal gotra claim to be descendants of Suryavanshi Raja Bali. But according to Bhagvat Dutt they belong to the Anu dynasty. According to the Mahabharat (Chapter - Adi Parva) King Bali is called the grandson on the maternal side of Raja Daksha. According to "Deva Samhita," some Jats are the descendants of the daughter of Raja Daksha. Many historians regard Bali as the descendant of Yayati. Bhagwat Dutt has proved that the Baluchis (of Baluchistan) are the descendant of Anu. In Haryana several villages are found belonging to this gotra. The Sikh Jats belonging to this gotra are found in several big villages like Sathila, Batala in Amritsar. This gotra traces its origin from Ghazni (now in Afghanistan).

Greek History

Belus or Belos or Bel in classical Greek or classical Latin texts in an Assyrian context refers to one or another purportedly ancient and historically mythical Assyrian king, such king in part at least a euhemerization of the Babylonian god Bel Marduk.

E. J. Chinnock[19] writes....The Phoenician god Melkarth (lord of the city), whom the Syrians called Baal (lord), was supposed to be identical with the Grecian Heracles, or Hercules, who was the mythical ancestor of the Macedonian kings. Curtius (iv. 7) tells us that Alexander affirmed he had been ordered by an oracle to sacrifice in Tyre to Heracles. Gesenius informs us that a Maltese inscription identifies the Tyrian Melkarth with Heracles.

Vala clan in Gujarat

The Vala clan is found in the state of Gujarat in India. They claim to be the earliest settlers in Saurashtra, and are descendents of Shiladitya, the Valabhi ruler of Gujarat. After the overthrow of Valabhi, the Valas settled in the south western Saurashtra, which is known as Valak, after the clan. The Vala were overthrown by the Gohils, and are now found as landholders. A few live in villages near the town of Mahuva, in a village Nanivavdi near the town Ranpur, and in Kadvasan in Kodinar area and also in a village of Khadol near the town Dhandhuka. Some twelve villages where Valas are located are along Venu river near Jam Jodhpur and some more twelve villages near Valank in Talaja area in Bhavnagar district.

James Tod on Balas

James Tod is a pioneer historian on Jats who thoroughly scrutinized the bardic records of Rajasthan and Gujarat and also brought to light over a dozen inscriptions on the Jats. We reproduce the Chapter 7 Catalogue of the Thirty Six Royal Races from Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, Volume I, Publisher: Humphrey Milford Oxford University Press 1920, p. 134-135:

Bala

All the genealogists, ancient and modern, insert the Bala tribe amongst the Rajkulas. The birad, or ' blessing,' of the bard is Tatta Multan ka rao, Princes of Tatta and Multan, indicative of their original abodes on the Indus. They lay claim, however, to descent from the Suryavansi, and maintain that their great ancestor, Bala or Bapa, was the offspring of Lava, the eldest son of Rama ; that their first settlement in Saurashtra was at the ancient Dhank, in more remote periods called Mungi Paithan ; and that, in conquering the country adjacent, they termed it Balakshetra (their capital Valabhipura), and assumed the title of Balarae. Here they claim identity with the Guhilot race of Mewar : nor is it impos-

[p. 135]: sible that they may be a branch of this family, which long held power in Saurashtra.1 Before the Guhilots adopted the worship of Mahadeo, which period is indicated in their annals, the chief object of their adoration was the sun, giving them that Scythic resemblance to which the Balas have every appearance of claim.

The Balas on the continent of Saurashtra, on the contrary, assert their origin to be Induvansa, and that they are the Balaka- putras who were the ancient lords of Aror on the Indus. It would be presumption to decide between these claims ; but I would venture to surmise that they might be the offspring of Salya, one of the princes of the Mahabharata, who founded Aror.

The Kathis claim descent from the Balas : an additional proof of northern origin, and strengthening their right to the epithet of the bards, ' Lords of Multan and Tatta.' The Balas were of sufficient consequence in the thirteenth century to make incursions on Mewar, and the first exploit of the celebrated Rana Hamir was his killing the Bala chieftain of Chotila, in Kathiawar (BG, viii. 407). The present chief of Dhank is a Bala, and the tribe yet preserves importance in the peninsula.

In Chauhan records

Dasharatha Sharma in "Early Chauhan Dynasties" [180-191] writes about Jalor Chauhan ruler - Samantasimha and Kanhadadeva.

Samantasimha - [Page-180] The inscriptions of Samantasimha range from V. 1339 to 1362 and show Samantasimha ruling over almost the same territories as his father,Chachigadeva. Of Samantasimha's 16 inscriptions, four come from Bhinmal, three from the state of Sirohi, and the rest from various parts of the Jodhpur division of Rajasthan. About V. 1353, he associated his son, Kanhadadeva , with himself in the government of Jalor; The Jalor inscription of Samantasimha, V. 1353, refers itself to the reign of Maharajakula Sri-Samvatasimha, while Kanhadadeva was subsisting on his lotus like feet and bearing the burden of administration (EI, XI, pp. 61f.). Similarly the Chohtan inscription V. 1356, speaks of Maharajakula Sri-Samvatasimhadeva and Rajan Kanhadadeva.

In V. 1353 (1296 AD) the ruler on the throne of Delhi was Firuz's nephew and assassinator, Ala-ud-din Khalji, perhaps the greatest of Sultans of Delhi, whose avowed ambition was to end all Hindu principalities and kingdoms, and who had been advised by his trusted counselors to treat the Hindus as no better than slaves. Samantasimha of Jalor does not appear to

[Page-181] have been a man gifted or capable enough to fight against such a redoubtable adversary. It was good that he realised the need of some assistance, and acting probably on the advice of his people put the real direction of the affairs of the state into the hands of Kanhadadeva, then perhaps a young man of twenty five years or so.

Kanhadadeva - Kanhadadeva had not to wait long for a chance to prove his mettle. In the third year of his joint reign, i.e., 1298 A.D., Alauddin decided to conquer Gujarat and destroy the temple of Somanatha. As the best route for his army lay through Marwar, he despatched a robe of honour to Kanhadadeva and desired that he should permit the Khalji forces to pass through his territory. Worldly wisdom should have dictated instant submission to the imperial orders. But to the brave Kanhadadeva svadharma mattered more than worldly pleasures, or a kingdom or even his life. He therefore sent back Alauddin's messenger with the blunt answer,

"Your army would, on its way, sack villages, take prisoners, molest women, oppress Brahmanas and slay cows. This being against our dharma, we cannot accede to your request."

Though the refusal must naturally have angered Alauddin,he took no immediate steps against Jalor. The Khalji army, commanded by Ulugh Khan and Nusrat Khan, marched instead through Mewar. Like a storm of extreme fury, it laid low every state, every chiefship, every principality that lay across its path, conquered very soon the whole of Gujarat and Kathiawar, and destroyed the temple of Somanatha, in spite of the gallant opposition offered by the Jethava (जेठव), Vala (वला), Baja (बाजा) and Chudasama (चुडासामा). And then on its way back to Delhi, Ulugh Khan, either on his own initiative or acting on

[Page-182] instructions beforehand by Alauddin, decided to punish Kanhadadeva for the affront to Khalji authority. Victorious every where he marched through the Jalor. When the Khalji army reached Sakrana (tah-Ahore), a village 18 miles from Jalor, Kanhadadeva’s chief minister, Jaita Devada, conveyed his master’s message to Ulugh.

[Page-183] In a well planned raid led by Jaita Devada, Nusrat Khan’s brother, Malik Aizudin and a nephew of Alaudin were slain. Ulugh Khan barely escaped his life. They liberated thousands of Hindu prisnors and the rescue of an idol of Somanatha which was being carried to Delhi.

[Page-184] Kanhadadeva had its five fragments installed respectively at Prabhasa, Bagada, Abu, Jalor and his own garden. This rescue of Somanatha forms in the popular mind Kanhadadeva's best and greatest title to greatness.
