History

According to local tradition, an unknown king named Saras founded the town in 7th century A.D. and built a fort. The material remains of an ancient fort can still be seen in the South-East of the present town. It is about 5 kilometers in circuit. Saras (सारस) is a gotra of Jats.[7] [8]

V. S. Agrawala[9] writes that Panini mentions Śairīshaka (शैरीशक) (IV.2.80) - same as Sirsa, situated on the north side of a dry bed of the Ghaggar, having considerable ancient ruins.

The name of the district is derived from its headquarters Sirsa. It is said to be one of the oldest places of North India and its ancient name was Sairishaka, which finds mention in Mahabharata, Panini's Ashtadhyayi and Divyadana.

There are a number of legends about the origin of the name of the town. As mentioned earlier, its ancient name was Sairishaka and from that it seems to have been corrupted to Sirsa.

According to another tradition, the name has its origin from the sacred river Sarasvati which one flowed near it. During medieval period, the town was known as Sarsuti. It has been mentioned as Sarsuti by a number of medieval historians.

The derivation of name Sirsa, is also attributed to the abundance of Siris trees [Albizia lebbock (Benth)] in the neighborhood of Sirsa which seems quite plausible for it finds some corroboration also in Panini and his commentator.

In ancient period, Sirsa was also known as Sirsapattan

In Mahabharata

In Mahabharata, Sairishaka is described as being taken by Nakula in his conquest of the western quarter. It must have been a flourishing city in the 5th century B.C. as it has been mentioned by Panini.

Sabha Parva, Mahabharata/Book II Chapter 29 mentions that Nakula subjugated Western Countries, which includes Shairishaka (=Sirsa) in verse (II.29.6). [12]

Udyoga Parva/Mahabharata Book V Chapter 101 mentions Bhogavati city and innumerable Nagas. It includes Shirishaka in verse (V.101.14). [13]

Mahabharata Anusasana Parva/Book XIII Chapter 4 mentions ancestry of Viswamitra, a Kshatriya whose sons became progenitors of many races of Brahmanas and founders of many clans. It includes Shirishi (शिरीषी) in verse (XIII.4.58). [14]

Modern History

Modern History: The Delhi territory along with districts of Bhattiana and Hissar was transferred to Punjab in 1858 and the district of Bhattiana was renamed as Sirsa. The Sirsa district which comprised three tehsils of Sirsa, Dabwali and Fazilka was abolished in 1884 and Sirsa tehsil (consisting of 199 Villages) and 126 villages of Dabwali tehsil formed one tehsil and the same was merged in the Hissar district and the rest of the portion was transferred to the Ferozepur district (Punjab). On September 1, 1975, Sirsa and Dabwali tehsils of Hissar district were constituted into a separate Sirsa district with headquarters at Sirsa. Ch Devi Lal's birthplace, the village of Chautala falls in this district.

Sirsa district is divided into 3 sub-divisions and 4 tehsils. There are a total of 323 villages in the district out of which 313 are connected with paved roads. About 79% of the population lives in the rural areas. Sirsa gets an annual rainfall of about 26 cm. The area under cultivation is 3,88,000 hectares out of which 3,06,000 is irrigated. The district excels in the production of Cotton, Rice, and citrus fruit.
