Mor (मोर) Maur (मौर) Maurya (मौर्य) is gotra of Jats found in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh. This gotra originated from country named Moron (मोरों). Also there was a town named Marohi (मरोही) at the sea level, the inhabitants of which were known as Mor. [1] Dilip Singh Ahlawat has mentioned Maur as a ruling clan in Central Asia.[2]
HistoryIt is one of the Jat clans as described by Megasthenes. He has mentioned them as Marohae living below the desert along with other clans like Dara, rara etc:
The Mor kings of Chittor in Rajasthan are named Maheshwar, Bhima, Bhoja and Maan Maurya. Maurya (मौर्य) Mori (मोरी) gotra of Jats are originated from Raja Maan Maurya (मान मौर्य). A mountain named Maura near Jhunjhunu town in Rajasthan is in their memory. [3] Mori clan is a branch of Yaudheyas. In the eighth century A.D. they were ruling at Kota also. A ruler named Dhaval Maur is named in an inscription of 738 A.D. [4] [5] Mor and Nara (नारा) are mentioned as Mura and Naraka (नरक) – two powerful “ Yavana” Kings, who were ruling over the Mura and Naraka alongwith Varuna in the western countries. [6] Also compare Maru and Nairi of Assyrians inscriptions. [5]
Actually there was a very generous king named "MOR DHAWAJ" & after his name the surname MOR started. According to Dalip Singh Ahlawat, [7] , Mor surname arises from Mauryan period and those who settled here modified it over the time. The Jat historian Bhim Singh Dahiya published a paper titled The Mauryas: Their Identity (Vishveshvaranand Indological Journal, Vol. 17 (1979), p.112-133) in 1979 and a book titled Jats the Ancient rulers (Dahinam Publishers, Sonipat, Haryana, by B. S. Dahiya I.R.S.) in 1982, wherein he concludes that the Mauryas were the Muras or rather Mors and were Jats of Scythian or Indo-Scythian origin. It is claimed that the Jatts still have Maur or Maud as one of their clan name. This view may become creditable only if it is accepted that the Jats evolved from the Madras, Kekayas, Yonas, Kambojas and the Gandharas of the north-west borderlands of ancient Indian sub-continent. This is because king Ashoka's own Inscriptions refer only to the Yonas, Kambojas and the Gandharas as the most important people of his north-west frontiers during third century BCE. They do not make any reference whatsover, to the Sakas, Shakas or the Scythians. See: Rock Edict No 5 [1] and Rock Edict No 13 [2] ( Shahbazgarhi version). The view of Bhim Singh Dahiya that the Mauryas were Jat is supported from the fact that Khoye Maurya is clan of Jats found in Uttar Pradesh, India. The meaning of 'Khoye Maurya' is the 'lost Maurya' in Hindi language. The Khoye Maurya clan is not found in Rajputs. Moreover Madras, Yona and Gandharas are clans found in Jats. Mahavamsa describes Chandragupta as coming of Kshatriya clan of Maurya:
According to Jat historian Ram Swarup Joon, [8]
